What is the nature of mankind? Are people truly good? Or are we evil? Can people operate in civilized society without government or do people need government in order to live in a just and fair world?
Below is something I found years ago from another teacher (wish I could give credit but I don't even remember where it was from) but I use it with my Honors or AP Government students because it is slightly more complex. The worksheet above is what I've broken down for my other students.

Using "V for Vendetta" to study Locke vs. HobbesThere aren't many ways to make philosophers easy to understand for students as easy to understand as doing a film analysis of "V for Vendetta". The added bonus is that for students it's an exciting way to start the course and build the understanding that this class is fun :) Which trust me, coming before we read Roche, Beard and Hofstader is an added bonus of relaxation.
Not to mention, this movie gives very clear examples of how government can be a force of evil or good in the eyes of the people. We can clearly talk about absolute government or the benefits of democracy based on examples from the movie. |
